The Tracy Farmer Center for the Environment recognized the Spring 2006 graduate research and travel scholarship recipients at its January 19th Scientific Advisory Board Meeting.

Programs:

  • 319 Commonwealth Water Education Program – Nonpoint Source Pollution: 27 teachers attended the program on nonpoint source pollution
  • Natural Resource Academy for Elementary Teachers: 10 elementary teachers from schools that primarily service students from low socioeconomic groups attended a one-week program
  • Energy Conference for Teachers: 20 teachers attended a three-day workshop including visits to energy-related sites throughout Eastern Kentucky
  • Natural Resource Academy for Urban Youth: 50 high school youth from Jefferson County attended a month long program 26, visited Robinson Forest
  • Community-Based Science for Students: 700 students and 20 teachers investigate five different community science problems alongside engaging UK faculty and staff and other community experts
  • Air Quality Regulations Program: Trained extension agents on air quality issues and produced publications
  • Bluegrass Partnership for a Green Community: Nine teams implementing community-wide projects: energy-efficient buildings, environmental education, transportation, water/storm water, sustainable foods, communications/outreach, recycling, purchasing, and green space; conference held August 10 -11
  • Wetland Restoration Institute: 27 attendees from Kentucky, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, British Columbia, and India
  • Invasive Species Working Group: Steering committee, listserv, series of brown bag seminars to facilitate communication regarding invasive species; state agencies also participate
  • SB-271: Help coordinate activities and budget, maintain web site
  • AWAKE: web site for general public and P-12 students; 265,000 hits/school month
  • Networking for Leadership, Inquiry, and Systemic Thinking (NLIST): web site for science teachers, administrators, and curriculum supervisors
  • Bluegrass Partnership for a Green Community: web site on sustainability for the Bluegrass community
